Hi friends! This past weekend we visited the Rock Creek Farm in Broomfield, CO (~25 minute drive from Boulder) to pick out the perfect pumpkins for Halloween. And let me tell you…it was so much fun!!! And it was my very first time to an actual pumpkin patch where you get to cut the pumpkins right off the vine. So neat!
The weather was exceedingly hot (think 85+ degrees), which for October was kinda strange to go pumpkin picking in. But we still enjoyed ourselves and had lots of laughs–sweatiness and all. 😛
As a first timer to the pumpkin patch, I have to admit that pumpkins on the vine are sooo cool! I loved bending down to investigate each little clump of them and to see which vines were connected to which pumpkins. Sometimes the vines were even intertwined with other vines, making the hunt even more exciting. Quite fascinating!
Like I mentioned above, it was incredibly hot this particular day. So instead of wearing what I imagined to be the perfect pumpkin patch outfit, I instead went with something a bit more practical for the weather. Namely, a flowy autumn dress, a chambray button up tied around my waist (to keep the dress from being too flowy, if ya know what I mean 😉 ), and my favorite purple rainboots.
I also threw on my new pair of sunglasses (from my shopping spree on Pearl Street) and a faux leather backpack to keep all my goodies in.
Allen looking mighty spiffy in his cute plaid button up that he saved for just this occasion.
And Conor with the knife we used to cut the pumpkins off the vine. So much fun!
Found the perfect pumpkin!
I loved that there were just rows and rows of pumpkins to choose from! We walked around for quite some time trying to find the best ones for carving later that night!
Conor with his perfect match of a pumpkin and a beautiful blue Colorado sky in the background too!
And Allen and I with our favorites!
It was so hot and sticky, but we were all still as happy as could be! When you’ve got the best of friends with you, it’s always a good time.
Allen and I both loved the wartiness of the pumpkin below. It reminded us of a witch’s nose! We got that one just for decoration in my apartment (not for carving).
After carrying all our pumpkins to the car, we then drove to the checkout tent to pay for them. There they had lots of smaller orange and white pumpkins for sell too, as well as colorful gourds in the weirdest and wackiest of shapes.
The teeniest pumpkins are my favorites!
Loved this pretty grey pumpkin too! It had the prettiest curly-Q vine.
And Allen…acting like he’s eating this guoud like corn on the cob! Haha! That guy always knows how to have fun…and how to make me laugh!
After paying for our pumpkins and grabbing a famous caramel apple to go (btw, if you go to Rock Creek Farm, you have to get one!), we headed back to Conor’s house to carve away our masterpieces!
Here’s Allen contriving some of the scariest faces he could think of. We are all a bit of perfectionists (#engineers), so drawing our ideas out on paper was good for us. After a while though, our creative juices just wanted to take over and let the designs go where there may!
Here’s Conor just going for it! I like his style.
Popping the top off and seeing all the goopy glop inside! (And yes, that is the technical term for a pumpkin’s insides. 😛 )
Fast forward a couple hours and you have our finished products! Can you tell which one is mine? 😛 (Nothing I make ever looks scary.) And there always seems to be a heart shape involved. Ha!
We had such a fun time visiting the pumpkin patch and carving our own pumpkins for Halloween. And while there’s always a finished product in mind with these sorts of things, utlimately it’s the journey–the time spent talking and laughing with your friends–that ends up being the most fun and most rewarding part!
What about you? Have you picked out the perfect pumpkin for carving yet?
