Hi, friends! Today I’m excited to share with you my new favorite layering piece for fall–a sweater vest!
If you remember this time last year, I was all about the sleeveless sweater trend. And while I love wearing sweater vests by themselves, I’ve also come to love layering them over a classic button up for a more professional, polished look.
When picking out a sweater vest, I try to stay with neutral colors because they are easiest to pair with the classic pieces you already own. For instance, last year I went for a monochromatic white on white look and paired a white sweater with a classic white pant.
But let’s be honest…colors are my jam! So when I picked up this gray sweater vest this year, I knew I wanted to pair it with something a little brighter.
Here I’ve paired it with the newest addition to my work wear classic shirts, this striped button up. I love the button up as is, paired with jeans and classic cap toe flats, but layering it with this gray sweater vest gives it a completely different (yet still very polished) feel. Not to mention it adds a layer of warmth when the temperatures get a little cooler.
The best part about sweater vests though? I can pair them with a variety of different tops underneath to create lots of different looks and feels!
Another trend I just had to try for myself this fall, was the mule loafer. These Gucci loafers made the style popular for me, but I’ve styled the Steve Madden ones here (much more affordably). After seeing Emily style them seamlessly time and time again (first with shorts and then with a skirt), I wanted to try them out for myself!
Loafers are a classic style borrowed from the guys–much like the button down shirt. But the classic style took a more casual vibe this season when it went backless with the mule style. I love how easy and simple they are to slip on and wear, and yet how classic and polished they still look from the front. They’re the perfect footwear for a casual Friday at the office or a great way to dress up a more casual weekend outfit.
And if you’re not into the mule (backless) style, this classic loafer would be another great option! And how cute are these red heeled loafers for holiday parties?!
For accessories in this outfit, I added a classic pave bracelet and my favorite wooden watch for fall. While I almost added on this necklace for a touch of sparkle around my neckline, I decided to keep things simple and let the layering of the sweater with the collar of the button up speak for itself. Sometimes simple is the best way to go!

At any rate, that’s how I like to layer a sweater vest this fall. It’s fun to try out all different kinds of combinations with the button ups you already own. They each give completely different looks! Already can’t wait to try it out with this blue and green plaid button up and black skinny jeans next!
