In preparing for the move to Virginia for my summer internship, I thought long and hard about the what clothing would be coming with me. It wasn’t necessary to bring a lot with me since I’d only be here for 10 weeks, but I also didn’t want to be hundreds of miles away from something I really needed. First and foremost I needed work clothes–that was a given! But almost just as important, I needed casual clothes I could wear for exploring and relaxing on the weekends.
So today I’m sharing a casual weekend outfit that incorporates layering one of my favorite patterns–stripes on stripes on stripes!
This past semester, I discovered the perfect v-neck tee at Madewell. It started innocently enough with a single tee in this beautiful blush color for springtime. I loved pairing it with a light yellow cardigan and jeans (coming soon), or a white denim skirt and teal scarf (seen here). But then I realized just how much of a rockstar this classic tee was and slowly went about adding more colors to my collection. Before I knew it I had one in every color of the rainbow and I’m not mad about it! They are some of my most worn items throughout the year, so I know they’ve been a good investment.
Madewell recently came out with a striped version too, so I added it to my growing collection of classic vneck tees. And you can bet it was one of the first things I packed for my summer on the East Coast.
Stripes are such a versatile print and one of my all-time favorite “neutrals”, if you can consider them that (which I do!). You can see some of my favorite striped outfits from the past here and here–and remember this one from the fall?! Stripes are just the best, no? I love how easily they can dress an outfit up too.
At any rate, stripes pair great with other solid colored pieces, and even with other patterns, which is why they are considered a “neutral” in my book. So for this outfit I wanted to play with layering stripes on stripes for something new!
Typically I would style a basic tee with jeans and a cardigan (like this), but for summer I’m loving tees paired with high-waisted skirts, like this striped one I’m wearing (similar here), or even high-waisted shorts, like this floral pair I’ve been living in.
Weekends typically include some blogging time for me and/or walking around and trying out new places to eat in town. So this outfit would be the perfect look to do either of those in! Comfy and casual yet styled and put together. Exactly how I want to look and feel on my downtime.
And playing on the stripes on stripes theme, I added a lightweight striped cardigan on top to keep warm in the cool breeze. Next to the basic tee, a cardigan is the most used item in my closet. And while most of my cardigans air more on the professional, classically cut side of things, I love that this cardigan is nice and slouchy (without looking sloppy) for a cozy summer alternative. And this one is super breathable too, even for those extra hot days when you just want something to keep the sun off your arms. (I wore my to explore Yorktown a couple weekends ago when I didn’t have any sunscreen.)
Also, my newest footwear obsession this spring/summer–Birkenstock sandals! They are oh so comfortable and go with literally anything. I even wear them to work with my dresses because they’ve got such great arch support. And with the sunny weather we’ve been having…why not?! Before getting this pair last year, I tried both the classic ‘Arizona’ style and the ‘Gizeh’ style that I’m wearing below. I ended up picking this style because it actually felt more comfortable to walk in, so I’d definitely recommend trying on different styles before you decide on one pair in particular. P.S. – How cute is this newest ‘Mayari Birko-Flor’ style?!
For accessories I added a fun gold arrow necklace (similar here) and a large weekend satchel to complete the look.
And that’s a quick look at one of my summer casual weekend outfits.
What about you? What do you like to wear on the weekends? Have any new summer favorites?
