Creating a little holiday magic with today’s outfit post. This look was a bit spontaneous in its creation, but I love love love how it turned out! In fact it’s probably my favorite look of any holiday outfit I’ve ever put together, which is saying a lot! Between the unexpected layering and the re-styled pieces in my closet, this look is a definite winner and would be perfect for any fancy holiday party you’ve got this season.
If there is one lesson J.Crew has taught me over the years (yes, that’s right…I watch and learn from their styling hacks), it’s that you always have the option to layer. It’s a lesson I learned long ago, but one I seem to have a hard time remembering to implement! So when putting together all of these holiday looks, I made it a priority to layer as much as possible. Because when you layer, you create a new look using pieces you already own in a way that typically hasn’t been done before.
This is how I see it… You are the only one with your unique wardrobe. No one else has the exact combination of pieces you’ve curated over the years. And so no one else can put together the exact look you have. They can take inspiration from you and vice versa. But your exact look is your own! Changing my perspective and looking at my wardrobe this way has made me more excited to get dressed in the morning and much more creative when it comes to putting new outfits together.
Layering a dress over a button-up is nothing new for me (see posts here, here, and here). It’s a combination that allows you to wear dresses when the temperatures get cooler and gives your look a more professional feel at the same time. It’s a perfect styling trick for any #girlbosses out there.
But as I’m showing you today, it’s also a great alternative to dressing up for a party too. You may remember the last time I styled this dress, it was with a simple cardigan over top (my go-to always is to add a cardigan). But adding a plaid button-up underneath the dress this time around was a fun way to mix patterns and make the look feel (if possible) even more festive for the holidays! In fact, I actually love how I’ve styled the dress here better than I did the first time around. The stewart plaid button-up somehow compliments and adds to the dress even more than on its own. How fascinating!
This dress is obviously old, but this styling trick would work for any black dress you own! I’ve listed a few options at the end of the post if you are in the market for a new one. I especially love this pretty black tulle dress!
I again added sparkly details like a crystal necklace around the collar, metallic pumps, and a glittery belt to accentuate my waist. I kept the clutch classic with my favorite black leather studded purse (similar here) from Vera Bradley. This one actually has a gold chain with it so that you can carry it as a clutch or wear it as a shoulder bag. It’s the perfect little purse for a special event, while still being large enough to hold my wallet and lip gloss for the evening.
A fun, festive layered holiday look for your next fancy party this season! And a great way to re-style the holiday pieces you already own in your closet!
What about you? Would you ever layer a dress over a plaid button-up?
