Oh man does it feel good to have my closet back after the Winter 10×10 Challenge. You too?! One of the things I appreciate most during the challenge is contentment with the 10 pieces I’m rotating in and out of my daily wardrobe. But what I didn’t expect this time around is that my closet contentment would stay around long after the challenge was over. Because if you look at it this way….you’ve gained a whole closet’s-worth of new clothes to wear after the challenge has ended. Yesss! Needless to say, I’m living on a high from all the “new” clothes I’ve suddenly inherited in my closet.
One of the pieces I’ve been reaching for recently has been this gorgeous velvet kimono from Anthropologie. I picked it up a few months ago (now it’s on sale!) and love that it can bring color and character to a simple everyday outfit. Here I’ve paired it with a metallic tee and high-rise wide-leg denim pants for a look that feels extra special and fun while remaining incredibly comfortable for daily wear.
One of my favorite details of this kimono is that it is velvet, so it’s a little warmer than your traditional sheer kimono. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t wear this piece as an alternative to a jacket if it’s cold outside–I still consider it to be a sheer, light weight cover-up. But I do like that it is made of a thicker material for warmer winter days while still remaining plenty breezy and billowy when you walk (a necessity for this kind of piece, no?).
I’m also not generally one to gravitate towards kimonos. For me, pieces that don’t add functionality (read: warmth) aren’t worth the extra hassle to incorporate into my daily looks. But there was something extra special and unique about this one that I just couldn’t resist. And I could see myself wearing with a lot of different items in my closet that I already owned.
One of the reasons this piece works in my wardrobe is that it pairs nicely with a lot of the colors I already have–like deep maroons and cobalt blues. And while I love love love the color yellow, it doesn’t always look the best against my skin tone. But this kimono allows me to bring in a little more yellow to my wardrobe without washing me out since it’s always worn over other items of clothing and never right up against my skin. I consider it a huge win! Yellow is such a great way to brighten up your winter darks.
And can we talk about the gorgeous floral pattern?! I’m a sucker for a unique floral pattern, seriously! (P.S. – Another floral kimono I’m crushing on for spring.)
Here, I paired the entire look with suede ankle boots that give the outfit a more boho, carefree vibe. This pair is incredibly comfortable for a full day of work or weekend errand running because of the lower chunky block heel. And I love that the beige color goes with denim so well! (P.S. – I have bought Old Navy boots the past 2 years and have been incredibly happy with the quality and wear of them! I also love that they don’t break the bank. 🙂 )
What about you? Would you ever style a floral kimono in the winter or spring?
