Hi, friends! I’m so excited to be heading to San Francisco today with Allen and my parents! Eek! It’s going to be amazing! I have actually never been to San Fran, so if you’ve got any suggestions or places we just have to see, please leave them in the comments below! The weather is supposed to be gorgeous, so I’m praying for lots of sunny days ahead!
Today’s post is a super fun one! I talked about Allen and I going out to Emmerson for Valentine’s Day in this post, but I had no idea they would have such an AMAZING astronaut art installation. I mean…how incredible, right?! It literally made my week to see it in person.
(I’m trying to convince Allen that we need to commission one for our apartment now. 🙂 )
Anyways, I’ve been really into all shades of pink recently. (It has everything to do with wanting spring to be here so badly already.) And while pinks (especially the light and blush varieties) can be really tricky to pair right with your skin tone, I take full advantage of wearing them February through the present. The key is to be patient with finding the right shades and trying lots of different ones out (knowing that some just won’t work). Sometimes it’s helpful to layer ones that don’t quite work over others that do work. For instance, the right shade of yellow is another tricky color to find. Instead of wearing yellow pieces directly against my skin, I try to layer them over other colors that I know work with my complexion (like here, here, and here). In this way, I am able to wear colors that tend to wash me out otherwise. You can use a similar technique for wearing blush pinks as well.
I’ve been really into graphic tees lately too (case in point). So this “Love first.” tee with a beautiful message was one I couldn’t resist. I loved it so much that I got it in the gray color too, which I can pair with jeans and a bright cardigan for some extra color.
As I’ve been pairing down my wardrobe and getting to the core of what my true style is, I’ve found that t-shirts are the number one item I wear year round. It’s funny how what you think your style should be isn’t necessarily what it is in reality. I used to fill my closet with a lot of beautiful blouses and button-ups, but the reality is that nine times out of ten I reach for a simple tee and cardigan. That may change when I get a 9-5 job, but for now when I’m in grad school, it’s the perfect combination. And really, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Why try to change something that is working?
My favorite way to take something from day to night (while still remaining comfortable and practical) is to add in a skirt and fun shoes. I love this pink suede skirt from a year ago (similar here) and these white boots are just everything (more on them below). Here I went head first into my blush pink obsession and paired all different colors of pink together for an incredibly sweet yet modern look.
P.s. If you haven’t discovered Madewell sweater cardigans for the winter months, you are missing out! I have them in a variety of colors, but I’m particularly partial to this pretty pink one in the spring. If t-shirts are my number one most used item, then cardigans are a close second. Whether I go with a heavier weight one in the winter or a lighter one in the summer, you can bet I’ve always got one close at hand. Cardigans are the perfect piece for making sure you are always warm enough, no matter what kind of t-shirt or blouse or dress you are wearing underneath. It takes the guess work out of what to wear when you already have the “what if?” answered. And layering means you can always take it off if you get too warm.
And can we talk about these boots for a second?! Oh my goodness I love them so much! I’ve lovingly dubbed them my Moon Boots after wearing them with this space mural. Much like styling my black leather jacket, these boots feel way too cool for me. And yet they are incredibly easy to style. I’ve paired them here with a pink suede skirt to keep the look feeling groovy, but you could just as easily pair them with dark skinny jeans for an edgier look. Or even a pretty floral dress in the spring!
I also promised you guys that I would give you an update on how our date night was at Emmerson. It was amazing! It felt so fancy and fun to splurge on a nice meal out together. And the food is amazing! We both ended up getting pasta dishes (ALL the carbs!) , splitting a salad, and indulging in the most decadent dark chocolate/coffee dessert we’ve ever had. Yum! If you end up going, make sure to get the house made bread for an appetizer as well. It is incredible.
I’m really wanting to try out Emmerson for brunch one day too. Their avocado toast with a poached egg and house latte sounds delish! Anyone want to go with me?!
What about you? What colors are you loving this spring?
